A little history about us!

McGinnis Cottage Bed and Breakfast McGinnis Cottage Bed & Breakfast Inn, located on historic “Banker’s Row” was built by the famous architect Herbert C. Dimick, noted by historians as one of the country’s great Victorian architects of the time. It should be noted that the designation of “Banker’s Row” was not because bankers built and resided in these homes, but because the homes were constructed so well for the time that only wealthy home buyers could afford the homes, hence the reference to “bankers”. It is believed that John A. Ewing contracted with Dimick to build this and other adjacent houses on “Banker’ Row” around 1897 using many of the original timbers from the Leadville Ice Palace. Ewing was an attorney at law, prominently known in professional connections in both Denver and Leadville, where he was regarded as one of the foremost representatives of the Denver bar. He was married in 1898, about the same time that this house was built. He later moved in 1903 to Denver, where it is believed this house served as his summer residence.

Leadville Hotel

From 1935 to 1988 the house was owned and occupied by Jack Laing, also a prominent attorney, and his wife where they raised their one son. Mr. Laing was well know for his cigar smoking poker games held on the third floor which is now the Queen’s Loft. Laing was married to Anamay Cody whose family was prominent in the mining industry of Leadville. The house was later converted into a Victorian bed & breakfast by Jolene and Bobby Woods and recognized as the Woodland Manor by the early 1990’s, and was more recently renovated and re-established as the McGinnis Cottage Inn Bed & Breakfast in 2005. Restored to its original 1898 charm, this Victorian bed and breakfast inn is filled with authentic antiques, beautiful colors, and modern amenities, including flat screen TV’s in every guest room.

Leadville Motel

Donna McGinnis has done an excellent job of decorating these rooms, with lovely comforters and quilts on the beds and interesting artwork on the walls. The Queen’s Loft, a spacious suite with luxurious bedding, a fireplace, a jetted tub, and privacy (it covers the entire third floor). The first floor parlor has an exquisite fireplace surrounded by gorgeous Italian tiles and ornate metalwork with a delicately carved oak mantel topped by a beveled mirror. This is one of the most grand fireplaces you will ever see, and it is original to the home.
